Grapes

The poem Grapes by D. H. Lawrence, accompanied by eight original chine collé mezzotints by Judith Rothchild, was published in 1999, on Lanagravure paper, in an edition of 50. The wrappers, in Somerset Black Velvet paper, the slipcases, and the boxes have been hand screen printed by the artist. The text hand-set in Vendôme Romain was printed on an 1867 Albion press by Mark Lintott.
The format is that of a « leporello » - a single folded sheet - with the long mezzotints winding through the verses like the tendrils of the vines. Written when he was in exile in Italy, Lawrence has endowed the grapevine with mythical properties - although the poem is as much his view on the prohibition of alcohol in the States at the time.

The deluxe edition of 10 copies, numbered 1/50 to 10/50, is presented in clamshell boxes and includes an extra original mezzotint printed exclusively for this edition. The regular edition of 40 copies (11/50 - 50/50) is presented in slipcases. The boxes and slipcases are by Claude Vallin.
All the books are signed by the artist.

Format 7 ½ x 10 ½ in.
